In dry iron removal from quartz sand using a permanent-magnet dry roller magnetic separator, material sticking to the magnetic roller surface is a common problem. When the material moisture content is too high or there is excessive fine powder, the fine powder gradually adheres to the magnetic roller surface, forming a layer of material shell that shields the magnetic field lines and significantly reduces iron removal performance.

Material moisture content exceeding 1% is the main cause of sticking. Dry magnetic separation requires dry feed material; when moisture exceeds the limit, fine powder easily adheres to the magnetic roller. The solution is to ensure the feed material is thoroughly dried or naturally sun-dried before feeding, keeping the moisture content below 1%. If there is no drying equipment upstream, a hot air duct can be installed before the magnetic separator to carry away surface moisture from the material with hot air.
Increased surface roughness of the magnetic roller also worsens sticking. After long-term operation, the stainless steel layer covering the magnetic roller surface wears, creating fine scratches that make it easier for fine powder to embed and adhere. It is recommended to gently polish the magnetic roller surface with fine sandpaper in the circumferential direction once a month to remove burrs and scratches and keep the surface smooth. Clean thoroughly after polishing before restarting the machine.
Worn or misaligned iron discharge scraper can also cause sticking. The purpose of the iron discharge scraper is to scrape off the iron powder attracted to the magnetic roller surface. When the scraper is worn or the gap between it and the magnetic roller is too large, iron powder and material residue accumulate on the roller surface and build up thicker over time. Check the fit between the scraper and the magnetic roller; the gap should be maintained between 0.5-1mm, and replace it promptly if severely worn.
During routine inspections, observe the magnetic roller surface once per shift. If sticking is found, stop the machine and clean it promptly; do not wait until the magnetic force is completely shielded before addressing it.
