During operation of a single-drum dryer, the drum surface temperature becomes so hot that you cannot keep your hand on it—an energy consumption problem encountered by many customers. Heat that should be used to dry the material is instead lost in large quantities through the drum wall, so fuel consumption rises while the moisture content of the discharged material cannot be reduced. The problem usually lies in two areas: the insulation layer and the internal material-lifting structure.

Missing or damaged insulation is the primary cause of drum heat loss. The outer wall of a single-drum dryer is typically covered with rock wool or aluminum silicate insulation, protected by an outer layer of color steel sheet. After long-term operation, the insulation becomes damp and compacted, and the color steel sheet corrodes and falls off, greatly reducing insulation performance. The inspection method is simple: use an infrared thermometer to measure the surface temperature along the length of the drum. Under normal conditions it should not exceed 60°C. If a certain section is noticeably higher, the insulation there has failed. To repair, remove the damaged insulation, refill with rock wool and compact it, fix the outer color steel sheet with rivets, and apply high-temperature-resistant sealant at the joints.
Worn or missing lifting flights allow heat to be transferred directly to the drum wall. The function of the lifting flights is to lift the material to form a material curtain so that the hot air can fully exchange heat with the material. Once the lifting flights wear out, the material cannot be lifted, and a large amount of wet sand slides along the drum wall; the heat is absorbed by the drum wall and then lost to the air. It is recommended to check the wear of the lifting flights once a month and replace them promptly when wear exceeds one-third of the original height. The spacing between lifting flights should be controlled at 150–200 mm; if the spacing is too large, the material coverage will be uneven and the local drum wall temperature will be too high.
Hot air temperature that is too high or air volume that is too large will also push up the drum temperature. When the outlet temperature of the hot air furnace exceeds the set value, the drum is overheated and the surface temperature naturally rises. Check whether the burner air damper opening of the hot air furnace is appropriate. If the flame is white and bright, it indicates excessive air volume and high temperature, and the damper should be properly closed. Keeping the hot air temperature within a reasonable range can meet the drying requirements without overheating the drum wall.
During daily inspections, measure the drum surface temperature once per shift with an infrared thermometer. If it is found to be high, troubleshoot in the order of "first check the insulation layer, then the lifting flights, and finally the hot air temperature."
