Sudden jamming or difficult rotation of the rotating ring during operation of a vertical ring high-gradient magnetic separator is a more serious fault than a drop in processing capacity. Once the rotating ring seizes, the magnetic matrix cannot discharge iron normally, the separation operation is forced to stop, and forced startup may also burn out the motor or twist off the main shaft.
Foreign matter entering between the rotating ring and the magnetic poles is a common cause of jamming. Broken steel rods, bolts, large ore chunks, etc. mixed into the feed get stuck in the gap between the rotating ring and the magnetic poles, blocking the rotating ring as it turns. Once jamming is found, stop the machine immediately, cut off the power, and manually turn the ring to confirm the jam location. Open the end cover on that side, gently tap the edge of the rotating ring with a copper rod or wooden mallet, and try turning it in reverse to work the foreign matter out. After removing the foreign matter, clean it thoroughly and check the surfaces of the rotating ring and magnetic poles for damage.
Poor lubrication or damage to the bearings can also cause difficult rotation of the rotating ring. The rotating ring bearings work long-term under high load and dusty conditions, so grease is consumed quickly; after running low on oil, the balls wear and the cage deforms, and rotation resistance grows greater and greater. It is recommended to add lithium-based grease every 500 working hours and completely replace it every six months. During inspection, turn the rotating ring by hand; if you feel obvious jerking or hear abnormal noise, the bearings are damaged and must be replaced immediately.
An overly tight V-belt is also an easily overlooked cause of jamming. On some models, the rotating ring is driven by a V-belt; when the belt is adjusted too tight, the motor load increases and it easily seizes under slight resistance. The correct approach is to adjust belt tension to just the point where it does not slip. Once ring jamming occurs, the V-belt can slip on its own, protecting the motor and reducer from damage.
During daily operation, pay attention to changes in the rotating ring current; a continuous rise in current often indicates that jamming is about to occur. When the rotating ring turns poorly, do not force startup; first turn it by hand for inspection, then decide on a handling plan.
