After an electromagnetic dry powder magnetic separator has been running for one or two years, many customers find that the iron removal effect is far worse than before. When measured with a gaussmeter, the magnetic field strength in the separation zone is more than 20% lower than the initial value. The decline in magnetic field strength usually originates from two areas: the excitation coil and the magnetic circuit.

Aging of the excitation coil or inter-turn short circuits is the primary cause of magnetic field decline. When the coil works at high temperatures for a long time, the insulation layer gradually ages. After slight inter-turn short circuits occur, the number of effective turns decreases, and the magnetic field strength declines accordingly. The inspection method is simple: disconnect the power, use a multimeter to measure the DC resistance of the coil, and compare it with the standard value in the manual. A deviation of more than 10% indicates that the coil has aged or is short-circuited and needs to be replaced. If the resistance is normal but the magnetic field is still low, check whether the output current of the excitation power supply reaches the rated value. Damage to the rectifier components can also cause insufficient current.
Rust on the magnetic yoke or wear of the magnetic media will also weaken the magnetic field. The magnetic yoke is the path for magnetic lines of force. After rusting, its magnetic permeability decreases, and the loss of magnetic lines of force during transmission increases. Open the magnetic system housing and check the surface of the magnetic yoke for corrosion. For slight corrosion, polish with sandpaper and apply anti-rust paint. For severe corrosion, the magnetic yoke needs to be replaced. After the magnetic media (steel mesh or steel rods) wear and become thinner, the magnetic field gradient decreases, and the adsorption capacity declines. It is recommended to replace the magnetic media every two years.
Poor cooling causes the coil temperature to become too high, and the magnetic field will also attenuate. When the coil temperature exceeds 80°C, the magnetic field strength drops significantly. Check whether the cooling water circuit is unobstructed and whether the water temperature is normal, and clean scale and impurities inside the water circuit. During daily operation, pay attention to the temperature control instrument. When the temperature is too high, immediately reduce the load or stop the machine for heat dissipation.
The decline in magnetic field strength is a gradual process. By the time the iron removal effect becomes noticeably worse, it has often already dropped considerably. It is recommended to use a gaussmeter to detect the magnetic field strength of the separation zone once every quarter, keep records, and promptly investigate if a continuous decline is found.
