During the operation of the hydraulic classifier, the overflow concentration fluctuating up and down is a common headache for many customers. When the concentration is too high, fine powder cannot escape, and classification efficiency drops; when the concentration is too low, a large amount of water is wasted, and the burden on subsequent concentration and filter pressing increases. The root cause is often not the equipment itself, but poor coordination between the overflow weir and the feed rate.

If the overflow weir height is inappropriate, the overflow concentration cannot remain stable. When the overflow weir is too low, the slurry residence time in the tank is short, coarse particles also pass over the weir into the overflow, and the concentration is too high; when it is too high, the settling path for fine particles is too long, a large amount of fine powder settles into the underflow, and the overflow concentration is too low. It is recommended to first measure the actual height of the overflow weir, which should normally be controlled at about two-thirds of the tank height. When adjusting, raise or lower it by 50-100 mm each time, observe for 2 hours, then sample and test, gradually finding the optimal position.
If the feed rate fluctuates too much, the overflow concentration jumps up and down accordingly. When the incoming material from the front end varies greatly, the liquid level inside the classifier and the upward water flow velocity also change. When the feed rate suddenly increases, the overflow becomes thicker; when it decreases, the overflow becomes thinner. It is recommended to add a buffer tank before the classifier to stabilize the feed rate. Check the feed concentration and flow rate once per shift, and promptly inspect the upstream equipment when the fluctuation exceeds 10%.
Unstable upward water flow also affects the overflow concentration. When water pressure fluctuates or the valve opening changes, the upward water flow velocity changes, and the settling state of fine particles changes accordingly. Install a pressure gauge on the inlet pipe to keep the water pressure stable. The water flow rate is recommended to be configured at 2-3 times the feed rate, which can be monitored with a float flowmeter; adjust the valve promptly when fluctuations are found.
During daily inspections, sample and test the overflow concentration every 2 hours, ideally controlling it within the range of 10%-15%. If the concentration is found to be consistently too high or too low, troubleshoot one by one in the order of "first check the overflow weir, then the feed rate, and finally the water flow rate."
