In dry iron removal from quartz sand using a permanent-magnet dry roller magnetic separator, whether the feed particle size falls within the equipment's design range directly determines the iron removal effect. Many customers find that the iron content of the finished product fluctuates unpredictably, and after extensive troubleshooting, the problem turns out to be fluctuations in the grinding or classification process, causing the material entering the magnetic separator to exceed the equipment's processing capacity.

If the feed particle size is too coarse, magnetic impurities become wrapped inside the particles and the magnetic force cannot reach them. The magnetic field depth of a dry roller magnetic separator is limited, and it is typically suitable for fine powder materials below -2mm. When a large amount of coarse particles above 2mm is mixed into the feed, these particles roll rapidly across the magnetic roller surface, and the internal or interlocked magnetic minerals are discharged with the sand before they can be attracted. What's worse, coarse particles also bounce on the magnetic roller surface, knocking off already-attracted fine iron powder, further worsening the iron removal effect. The solution is to check the grinding or classification process upstream of the magnetic separator to ensure feed fineness remains stable within the equipment's design range. If the upstream grinding discharge particle size fluctuates significantly, a high-frequency vibrating screen can be added before the magnetic separator as a safeguard.

If the feed particle size is too fine, it will also affect the iron removal effect. When the proportion of -200 mesh fine powder in the material exceeds 80%, the fine powder tends to agglomerate or adhere to the magnetic roller surface, forming a material shell that shields the magnetic field lines and reduces adsorption capacity. At the same time, the fine powder has poor flowability and distributes unevenly on the magnetic roller surface, with some areas having an excessively thick material layer and some areas even having no material coverage. In this case, a dispersing device can be installed before the magnetic separator to re-disperse the agglomerated material, or the feed rate can be appropriately reduced to give the fine powder enough time to stay in the magnetic field zone.

Uneven particle size distribution inevitably causes fluctuations in iron removal effect. When coarse particles and fine powder are mixed in the same batch of material, the coarse particles bounce on the magnetic roller surface while the fine powder adheres to it. These two motion states interfere with each other, making the separation process extremely unstable. It is recommended to install classification equipment before the magnetic separator to divide the material into two size fractions, which are then processed by magnetic separators with different parameters—the coarse fraction using higher magnetic roller speed and a thicker material layer, and the fine fraction using lower speed and a thinner material layer. Although this increases equipment investment, the iron removal effect and stability will be significantly improved.

During daily inspections, sample and test the magnetic separator feed particle size once per shift, using standard sieves for quick screening to confirm whether the -2mm proportion remains stable within the equipment's required range. When out-of-spec particle size is found, first check the upstream grinding or classification equipment, then adjust the magnetic separator parameters. Shanlu Heavy Industry has accumulated years of experience in the field of dry magnetic separation of quartz sand and can provide magnetic separator selection and supporting classification solutions based on customers' material particle size distribution.
