During operation of the vertical ring high-gradient magnetic separator, a persistently high excitation coil temperature is a more dangerous signal than a drop in processing capacity. Once the coil temperature exceeds 80°C, the magnetic field strength begins to noticeably decay. Prolonged overheating can also cause insulation aging and inter-turn short circuits, and in severe cases the entire coil set can burn out, resulting in high repair costs. The problem usually lies in the cooling system.

Cooling water channel blockage is the number one cause of coil overheating. The coil relies on circulating water to carry away heat. When water quality is poor or the system has not been cleaned for a long time, scale builds up and impurities deposit on the inner walls of the water channels, the water flow becomes smaller and smaller, and heat exchange efficiency drops sharply. The way to judge this is simple: touch the inlet and outlet pipes by hand. If the temperature difference is very small, it indicates insufficient water flow. It is recommended to check the cooling water flow and pressure once a month, and to circulate-clean the water channels with a dedicated cleaning agent once a quarter. If conditions permit, the open water-cooling system can be converted to a closed-loop cooling system to block out impurities at the source.
Excessively high cooling water temperature can likewise lead to poor coil heat dissipation. When the inlet water temperature exceeds 30°C, the temperature difference between the coil and the cooling water decreases, and the cooling effect is greatly reduced. Check whether the cooling tower or chiller is working properly. When the water temperature is on the high side, replenish with low-temperature water or increase cooling capacity in a timely manner. Pay particular attention to water temperature changes during high-temperature periods in summer, and if necessary, install an auxiliary refrigeration device.
If the excitation current runs above the rated value for a long time, the heat generated by the coil will inevitably increase. When the feed rate is too high or the magnetic matrix is clogged, operators often increase the current to maintain magnetic field strength, which further raises the coil temperature and creates a vicious cycle. It is recommended to check the ammeter reading. If it remains more than 10% above the rated value, appropriately reduce the feed rate or stop the machine to clean the magnetic matrix, rather than simply increasing the current.
During daily operation, pay attention to the temperature control instrument. When the temperature approaches the warning value, immediately reduce the load or stop the machine to dissipate heat. When the coil temperature is stably controlled below 40°C, the equipment operates most reliably.
