Trommel screens are widely used in the pre-classification stage of quartz sand, but after a period of operation the throughput gradually declines—the same feed rate can no longer be screened, and the finished product is mixed with a large amount of unscreened fine powder. The problem usually lies in two areas: screen hole clogging and drum rotation speed.

Screen hole clogging is the primary cause of reduced throughput. When the moisture content of quartz sand exceeds 5%, fine powder adheres to the inner walls of the screen holes and builds up thicker and thicker, so the effective screening area becomes smaller and smaller, making it difficult for material to pass through. Although the trommel screen is equipped with internal roller brushes or scraper cleaning devices, the cleaning effect drops significantly once the roller brush wears out. It is recommended to observe the amount of undersize material once per shift and stop the machine to inspect the screen holes when a significant decrease is found. Rinse the screen surface with a high-pressure water gun, keeping the water pressure below 0.5 MPa to avoid damaging the screen mesh. Replace the roller brush promptly when it wears down to less than half its original bristle length.
Too low a drum rotation speed will also prevent throughput from increasing. The trommel screen relies on drum rotation to tumble and advance the material; when the speed is too low, the material moves slowly inside the drum, the material layer builds up thicker and thicker, and fine particles are carried away by coarse particles and discharged from the outlet before they can contact the screen surface. Normal speed is generally controlled between 12-18 r/min; for materials with high fine powder content, use a value toward the higher end, and for materials dominated by coarse particles, use a value toward the lower end. Speed adjustment is done via a frequency converter; adjust by 2 r/min each time and observe the throughput change for 2 hours before deciding the next step.
A mismatch between screen hole size and incoming material also affects throughput. If the screen holes are too small, screening resistance is high and throughput will inevitably decline; if the screen holes are too large, screening accuracy is insufficient. The appropriate aperture should be selected according to the particle size distribution of the incoming material; a common configuration is a three-layer screen with 20 mm on the top layer, 5 mm on the middle layer, and 1 mm on the bottom layer. If the raw material contains many flaky particles, enlarge the screen holes by one grade as appropriate to reduce the chance of pegging.
During daily inspections, record the throughput and undersize particle size once per shift. When throughput continues to decline, troubleshoot in the order of "check screen holes first, then adjust rotation speed, and finally check screen hole size."
